Universities

As universities change the lives of many, so too has the institutional experience changed the very appearance of America’s college campuses. University buildings are a part of the history of each college campus. TTG is privileged to serve many colleges and universities in helping them preserve and maintain their structures of significance.

"[W]hatever may be the future of architecture, in whatever manner our young architects may one day solve the question of their art, let us, while waiting for new monuments, preserve the ancient monuments. Let us...inspire the nation with a love for national architecture."-Hugo, Victor

University Hall | Purdue, University | West Layfayette, IN

Built in 1877, University Hall is the only remaining building of the original six buildings built on the campus of Purdue University. John Purdue requested to be buried in front of University Hall, and his grave site still serves as a monument to the University he loved. In 1999 a windstorm tore off part of the roof, which struck the steeple on the tower as it lifted away.
The Tradesmen Group rebuilt the damaged tower steeple, with new structural steel framing and concrete flooring. We also replaced the slate mansard roof and flat lock seam roofing. The cornice work included lead abatement encapsulation. All trades were performed in house with experienced craftsman specializing in each classification of work.

It was our privilege to serve the Purdue University in the restoration of this time honored building.

Beck Chapel | Indiana University | Bloomington, IN

With its quiet charm and gem like beauty, Beck Chapel is a favorite location for student and alumni weddings and other special occasions at the Indiana University. The Tradesmen Group was contracted to remove and rebuild the roof in its entirety allowing for the structural integrity required to accommodate the weight of a new slate roof.

Rose Well House | Indiana University | Bloomington, IN

Another favorite quiet refuge for the students at IU is The Rose Well House. This structure built in 1908 is listed on the National Register of Historic places. The structural integrity of this pavilion was compressed due to settling. We carefully disassembled and catalogued each limestone unit. An on the job discovery revealed an underground cistern causing the settling. The Tradesmen Group compacted fill into the cistern and poured a new concrete pad to provide stability for the stone structure. Our highly skilled stone masons rebuilt this structure to its full historical design, crowning this building with a new tile roof manufactured by Ludowici Celadon. It was a pleasure serving the Indiana University.

Orton Hall | The Ohio State University | Columbus, OH

Orton Hall is one of the most prestigious buildings at The Ohio State University, known for its chimes heard throughout campus. Built in 1893, Orton Hall was named after the first president of the university, Edward Orton Sr. The Tradesmen Group was privileged to be a part of this restoration project, working closely with the owner and architect, specializing in historical preservation.
We replaced the existing shingle roof with a new Ludowici Celadon tile roof to match the original tile installed in the 1800’s. Through archived records, we were able to manufacture an exact replica of the original tile. As part of this renovation project, we stabilized the existing roof with an additional 10 ton of structural steel framing and hangers in order to support the added weight of the tile. Additional ventilation was required to provide proper air flow throughout the attic.

A new ornamental copper cornice was fabricated to replicate the over 100 year old cornice around the conical tower.
