Tomochichi Federal Building Tower Repair

The Tradesmen Group LLC (TTG) was selected as a subcontractor by Brassfield & Gorrie, the Construction Manager as Constructor (CMc) on behalf of the General Services Administration (GSA), to assist with the design and construction for repairs to the historic marble tower on the Tomochichi Federal Building in Savannah, Georgia.

This project showcased TTG’s expertise in both collaborative design processes and complex historic preservation techniques, particularly in structural stabilization and restoration of sensitive materials.

Structural Repairs and Stabilization

  • Removal and replacement of the seventh, eighth, and ninth-floor levels
  • Installation of a new structural steel interior frame at the seventh level
  • Installation of permanent thru-wall stainless steel tie rods at four levels of the tower
  • Implementation of substantial shoring engineering and installation for floor replacements

Masonry Restoration

  • Comprehensive repairs to the historic white Georgia marble façade
  • Repointing of all mortar joints
  • Execution of Dutchman and fracture repairs
  • Limited stone replacement
  • Masonry cleaning, including specialized laser and poultice cleaning of sensitive marble substrates

Roof and Metalwork Restoration

  • Repair of the slate roof
  • Replacement of built-in copper gutters
  • Repair and painting of metal railings and stairs

Access and Support Systems

  • Design, custom fabrication, and installation of a substantial scaffold system
  • Engineering of support steel and scaffold loads to be carried by mass masonry walls in the building interior at the attic level
  • Erection of support steel through the main roof level
