Cupola Repairs of the Port Huron Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse

The Tradesmen Group LLC (TTG) was selected by the General Services Administration (GSA) as the Construction Manager as Constructor (CMc) to assist with the comprehensive restoration of the wood and copper cupola of the Port Huron Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse.

This project showcased TTG’s expertise in both collaborative design processes and complex historic preservation techniques.

Design Phase

  • Collaboration with Lord Aeck Sargent, nationally renowned preservation architects
  • Assistance in project development from 95% design to final construction documents
  • Participation in final design review, trial sample treatments, and cost reconciliations

Cupola Restoration

  • Paint removal from wood and metal surfaces using Sponge-Jet micro-abrasive and chemical removal methods
  • Restoration and replication of decorative wood components throughout the structure
  • Replacement of copper roof and related flashings
  • Fabrication and installation of new ornate copper ribs on the eight roof hips
  • Restoration of dormer faces and windows
  • Replacement of metal cladding at the cupola base
  • Application of a five-coat multi-component epoxy paint system

Scaffolding and Protection

  • Design and installation of scaffold system over the existing copper main roof
  • Implementation of intensive shoring in the attic to support scaffolding
  • Special attention to protecting the existing roof and attic from scaffold impact
