Stabilization And Repair Of The Historic Oxon Silo

The Tradesmen Group LLC (TTG) was selected by the National Park Service (NPS) to undertake the stabilization and repair of the historic Oxon Hill Farm Silo.

This project, part of TTG’s Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract serving the NPS in the National Capital Region, involved complex structural stabilization and meticulous restoration of a unique agricultural structure.

Structural Stabilization

  • Collaboration with Wiss, Janney, and Elstner Associates (WJE) for shoring plan design
  • Installation of new concrete floor to support internal steel frame
  • Implementation of a new internal steel frame for long-term support and stability

Terra Cotta Block Restoration

  • Replacement of failed terra cotta units with new blocks from Boston Valley
  • Extensive mockup process to match new blocks for size, configuration, shape, dimension, color range, and texture
  • One-by-one replacement of failed and deficient blocks according to WJE shoring plan

Masonry Work

  • Repointing of deteriorated and open masonry joints with new mortar

Exterior Reinforcement

  • Fabrication and installation of new stainless steel compression rings around the silo’s exterior

Roof Replacement

  • Removal of existing wood frame roof
  • Installation of new wood frame
  • Application of new copper roofing

Access and Safety

  • Design and erection of an engineered scaffold system for comprehensive silo access
