Mammoth Cave National Park Trail Restoration

The Tradesmen Group LLC (TTG) was selected by the National Park Service to undertake the rehabilitation of approximately two miles of the upper and lower historic cave trail at Mammoth Cave National Park.

This project involved the restoration of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, presenting unique challenges and requiring exceptional planning and execution.

Material Transportation and Installation

  • Transport and installation of over 3 million pounds of materials inside the cave
  • Execution without the use of heavy equipment to preserve the cave environment

Trail Reconstruction

  • New concrete paving for trail pathways
  • Installation of new concrete steps
  • Placement of new concrete pavers
  • Edging of trails with composite wood lint guards
  • Installation of new stainless steel handrails and other structural stainless steel components

Environmental and Cultural Preservation

  • Careful planning and execution to avoid damage to:
    • Cave environment
    • Priceless cultural resources
    • Wildlife, including endangered species
  • Close coordination with project archaeologists

Logistical Challenges

  • Extremely limited communications within the cave
  • Limited access to electricity and water
  • Complex project logistics requiring innovative solutions
