The Tradesmen Group, Inc, was selected to replace the copper roof on The Old Jefferson County Courthouse in the heart of downtown St. Louis MO. The Old Courthouse is part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial National Park operated by The National Park Service.
The entire roof, including all decking was 100% removed. New corrugated galvanized steel deck was installed over existing steel roof frame. Homasote roof deck was applied over the corrugated roof deck. Troughs for the new built-in gutters were formed and poured in light-weight concrete. In several locations structural repairs or alterations were required to structural steel members.
Built-in gutters of the roof were fabricated on-site from 32 oz copper. Primary standing seam roof panels were fabricated from 20 oz copper. The project installed approximately 700 lineal feet of new built-in copper gutter, 240 squares of new standing seam copper roof and 60 squares of soldered seam lead coated copper over the gable pediments.
Several new copper roof hatches were installed. A roof fall-protection system, a new attic catwalk system and lighting were also installed.
During progress of work it was discovered masonry on gable pediments needed repairs in the attic spaces. Substantial quantity of tuckpointing and brick relaying was also completed.
The project took approximately 11 months to complete.
The Tradesmen Group, Inc. is a proud recipient of the Copper in Architecture Award by the Copper Development Association, Inc. for the excellence in restoration performed on this project.
