In early September 2017, Hurricane Irma hit the Florida coast, as a Category 4 storm. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, located on Biscayne Bay in Miami, suffered tremendous losses from hurricane-force winds and the accompanying tidal surge. The total amount of damage was in the millions, and it has taken more than four years to return the estate to its pre-hurricane condition.
One of the most iconic and treasured features on the estate—the Tea House, which sits directly on the bay—suffered extensively.
