U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial Sculpture Conservation, Cleaning & Repair Project

The Tradesmen Group LLC (TTG) was selected by the National Park Service to execute conservation cleaning, waxing, and repairs of the iconic U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, VA.

This project showcased TTG’s expertise in specialized cleaning techniques and conservation methods for sensitive historical monuments, demonstrating the company’s ability to innovate and exceed client expectations.

Bronze Sculpture Conservation

  • Initial cleaning efforts using conventional water methods
  • Development and implementation of alternative cleaning techniques using the Sponge-Jet system
  • Effective removal of wax and surface contaminants without affecting existing patina
  • Bronze repairs, including welding repairs
  • Waxing of the bronze sculpture for ongoing protection

Granite Plinth Scope of Services 

  • Cleaning and repairs of the granite plinth
  • Utilization of Sponge-Jet cleaning system for polished granite surfaces
  • Removal of stubborn stains without damaging polished surfaces
  • Carving of new inscriptions for the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts
  • Re-gilding of all lettering and the USMC insignia

Innovative Cleaning Approach

  • Presentation of alternative cleaning techniques to the National Park Service
  • Performance of sample mockups for client approval
  • Successful implementation of Sponge-Jet cleaning system, exceeding expectations for both bronze and granite cleaning
