Nashville Davidson County Historic Courthouse Façade Repairs

The Tradesmen Group LLC (TTG) was selected by the Metro Nashville/Davidson County Government to undertake a comprehensive, multi-phase restoration of the historic courthouse.

Phase I (2020): Exterior Masonry Restoration

  • Cleaning and repair of limestone and granite masonry on the historic façade, plaza walls, and steps
  • Cleaning methods:
    • Use of mild, environmentally friendly detergent and biocide
    • Alternating cycles of hand scrubbing and low-pressure wash and rinse

Masonry repairs:

  • Repointing of failed mortar joints
  • Fracture and shard repairs
  • Stone patching
  • New lead T-joint and sealant installation
  • Retooling and re-polishing of granite

Phase II (2020): Emergency Restoration and Graffiti Removal

  • Response to damage from civil unrest on May 30, 2020
  • Immediate cleanup efforts
  • Long-term restoration campaign:
    • Restoration of damaged windows
    • Safe removal of extensive graffiti from limestone, granite, and bronze surfaces
  • Specialized techniques:
    • Collaboration with top conservators for trial tests
    • Implementation of laser cleaning in combination with other techniques
  • Additional work:
    • Select glazing repairs
    • Upgrades and replacements of faulty window glazing on original steel windows

Phase III (2023-ongoing): Rooftop and Structural Repairs

  • Extensive brick masonry restoration of rooftop-level parapet walls
  • Replacement of all window lintels with new hot-dipped galvanized lintels
  • Partial dismantling and reconstruction of high parapet walls to facilitate:
    • Repairs of internal structural steel beams and columns
    • Addressing moisture infiltration issues
  • Repairs of internal structural steel beams and columns
  • Replacement of fourth-floor balcony flat-locked copper roof on the south elevation

Phase IV (Planned through 2025): Metalwork Assessment and Restoration

  • Assessment and repair recommendations for:
    • Historic bronze doors on the south elevation
    • Cast-iron door surrounds on the north elevation
