Fort Negley Wall Rehabilitation, Phase I & II

Metro Nashville/Davidson County Government selected The Tradesmen Group LLC (TTG) to undertake the rehabilitation and reconstruction of failing and distressed portions of Fort Negley's dry-stacked stone walls. This project was executed in two phases: Phase I in 2022 and Phase II in 2023.

Fort Negley is honored as a UNESCO “Site of Memory” for its history, contributions, and associations with the abolition of slavery in the United States during the Civil War. Fort Negley is one of four such UNESCO “Sites of Memory” in the U.S. The Fort Negley restoration project underscores TTG’s commitment to preserving America’s cultural heritage, combining skilled craftsmanship with a deep respect for historical integrity and archaeological significance.

Phase I (2022)

Rehabilitation and reconstruction of:

  • Main sally port
  • Adjacent north scarp walls

Phase II (2023)

Rehabilitation and reconstruction of:

  • South Main Work
  • East Bastion

Restoration Process

  • Survey and documentation of existing conditions
  • Archaeological oversight of all activities, particularly ground-disturbing operations
  • Careful dismantling and removal of walls and associated backfill
  • Salvage and assessment of stones for possible reuse
  • Reconstruction using traditional dry stack stone construction methods
  • Sourcing of new Tennessee gray limestone similar to original and WPA-era reconstruction materials
  • On-site stone splitting and shaping using historically accurate techniques:
    • Feather and wedges
    • Splitting wedges
    • Various stone hammers and chisels

This project showcased TTG’s capacity to:

  • Collaborate effectively with local government and heritage organizations
  • Implement meticulous documentation and preservation practices
  • Employ traditional construction techniques while adhering to modern safety and quality standards
  • Adapt to the unique challenges presented by historically significant sites

Throughout this project, the Tradesmen Group demonstrated its expertise in historic preservation and traditional construction techniques. Our team’s ability to work closely with archaeologists, use historically accurate methods, and source appropriate materials was crucial to the project’s success.
